The road to Pai
From Chiang Mai the road runs north to Mae Malai, then climbs into the hills on Route 1095 — people say it has 762 bends. In a private car you set the pace: there is no full minibus, and you can ask the driver for a short stop whenever you need one.

Which car for Pai?
All three cars make the trip. An SUV gives a higher seat and more room for bags on the bends; a van suits groups of up to 7.
In and around Pai
The fare covers hotels in Pai town. For a resort out in the valley, send its name on WhatsApp for a fixed price. Pai Canyon, a favourite place for the sunset, is by the main road just before town.
On the way
Short stops for the toilet, food or fuel are fine. A sightseeing stop or a detour is priced by message before the trip.
