Which airport?

Sukhothai Airport (THS) is the closer one, about 40 km and 40–50 minutes away. Phitsanulok Airport (PHS) is about 80 km and about 1.5 hours away. Both are small: the driver waits outside the arrivals exit after you collect your bags.

New town or old city

One fare covers hotels in New Sukhothai and around the historical park in the old city, about 12 km apart.

Chiang Mai to Bangkok in two days

Instead of one 9–10 hour drive, break the journey in Sukhothai: Chiang Mai to Sukhothai (about 4–4.5 hours), a night by the old capital, then on to Ayutthaya, Bangkok or the Bangkok airports the next day.
